music

Thanks to Spotify, I've discovered this band called Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - a traveling minstrel of musicians. Aside from the music, I am particularly in love with the look and feel of this video for one of my favourite tracks of theirs called "Home". (Expect a music and me feature soon!)

Enjoy!

music and me: bon iver

Last month, I launched a new series on the blog called Music and Me. You'll find my first entry here. Today, I am featuring another look inspired by another artist that I am absolutely in awe of - Bon Iver.

This indie folk band fronted by singer-songwriter Justin Vernon produces rich and melodic soundscapes accompanied by deeply personal and reflective lyrics.

Here's one of the best live versions of Calgary, one of my favorite Bon Iver songs.

Frontman Justin Vernon is often in t-shirts and that hipster uniform, the plaid shirt.

Beanie, plaid shirt, Ray-ban frames, skinny jeans and boots, disheveled hair. Yup. (Of course, the beanie was just for photo-op and didn't actually wear them out.)

Saw Justin Vernon performing their cover of I Can't Make You Love Me wearing a similar yellow beanie. Funny story about the beanie. I lost this twice - the first when I was biking on a rainy morning in Kos. Good thing the store I accidentally lost this in kept it aside for me. (It wasn't too difficult to forget me as I was probably the only Asian in the entire island!). Second while I was at my favorite bookstore in Athens. I 've walked around the store for a bit before I realized it was missing. Retraced my steps and found it. This really is for me. :)

I was wearing: Plaid shirt from Cotton On, Mossimo jean from Target (US), H&M boots and beanie.

heaven

My birthday is coming up and this weekend and I thought I'd put together a post series for my wishlist (y'know, in case the Internet gods are reading this).

First up, this new The Walkmen CD*, Heaven. I've been listening to this new record on You Tube almost everyday and I love how lyrically, the band sounds mature and settled (they are after all married with kids when they made this record) but still maintaining that signature lush and rich sounds. They give off that 1920s jazz sound.

And since this is a style blog after all, I love the band's styling - they dress as how I imagined 1920s rock band would.

The band's equally dapper when playing live shows.

Spot Hamilton Leithauser's cool Casio watch. :p

* When I mentioned to our 20-something intern that I am craving for this record and planning a trip to HMV, she looked at me like I just told her to wear daisy dukes and a tank top (i.e. eeeekkk, no!). YES! I STILL buy records.

summer inspiration

Though I am not a big fan of her music, I love watching this Gwen Stefani music video from 2005. I love the styling - very Dolce & Gabbana resort. Oh, to be enjoying a Mediterranean summer!

For my friends in Philippines, are you ready for summer?

ashes and fire

I'm so glad that one of my favorite singer-songwriters, the phenomenal Ryan Adams has finally come out with new music after 3 years.

Ashes and Fire is on repeat at the moment, particularly this lovely song Lucky Now.

Ryan's also looking very hipster in this in-studio performance.

The entire album and some special live performances are currently streaming on the Ashes and Fire website.

Enjoy!
